I helped a teacher friend with her webpage design by Photoshopping (new verb) her visage into a screenshot from a 1969 Japanese sci-fi movie featuring Gamera, in which the evil, brain-eating aliens were played by local actresses. The unforeseen result was that, from a Western perspective, aliens looked like Asian women (instead of the aliens just looking like people, from a Japanese point of reference).

The joke is that my friend is an Asian American living in Thailand, where she’s a “foreigner” in some ways and a native in others (she’s half Thai), which is what some of the content of her blog is about. The funniest parts of this assignment were her giving herself the alien “Spock” eyebrows, and the sort of Lucille Ball expression she put on that makes her look like an imposter trying to pull off being a native alien.

I also designed the logo and background (in accordance with her specifications – ex., pink & green).
